Alabama vs Florida State

Alabama vs Florida State will play Saturday night in Atlanta (8 p.m. ET, ABC). It’s a massive deal. Use this list to persuade your local bar to put it on instead of, I dunno, Liberty-Baylor.

1. Just look at Bama’s and FSU’s rankings. There’s never been a game like it.

Alabama is the preseason No. 1 in the AP Poll. Florida State is No. 3. There have been many 1-2 and 1-3 games at the ends of seasons and in title games, but this game’s status as a season opener between Goliaths makes it unique.

Every other time No. 1 has played a top-five opponent in Week 1 since the preseason poll began in 1950:

  • 1983: Nebraska vs. No. 4 Penn State in New Jersey
  • 1986: Oklahoma vs. No. 4 UCLA
  • 1985: Pitt vs. No. 5 North Carolina

FOUR THINGS TO WATCH

Deiter’s debut: Redshirt junior offensive linemen Michael Deiter has started 27 games at UW – 16 at center and 11 at left guard. Friday should mark Deiter’s first game at left tackle. Utah State isn’t expected to field a dominant defensive line, but Deiter likely will face smaller and quicker outside linebackers. Can he handle speed rushers and protect quarterback Alex Hornibrook?

New faces on the outside: T.J. Watt and Vince Biegel, who formed UW’s No. 1 outside linebacker tandem last season, are in the National Football League. That duo combined for 15½ sacks and 21½ tackles for loss last season and put consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks and runners. The job of filling the void falls to starters Garret Dooley, who has two starts; Leon Jacobs, who was moved to outside linebacker in the spring; and junior-college transfer Andrew Van Ginkel. Walk-on Tyler Johnson and Christian Bell, who sat out last season after transferring from Alabama, are battling to join the rotation.

Tailback by committee: Chris James and Bradrick Shaw shared the workload in the spring while Taiwan Deal recovered from ankle surgery. When camp opened, it appeared that James, Shaw, Deal and graduate transfer Rachid Ibrahim would give UW four solid options. Then Deal injured his surgically repaired ankle and freshman Jonathan Taylor came on like a runaway train. Taylor is talented enough and mature enough to handle being the starter. Yet more important than who starts the opener will be how running backs coach John Settle divvies up the carries.

One-man show: Redshirt sophomore Alex Hornibrook, who started all nine Big Ten regular-season games last season but also had to accept splitting time with then-senior Bart Houston, enters 2017 as the clear No. 1 quarterback. The intrigue, however, revolves around freshman Jack Coan, who was named the No. 2 quarterback. The staff no doubt wants to get Coan work so that he is ready if Hornibrook is lost for any amount of time because of injury. Coan is accurate, has a strong arm and is more mobile than Hornibrook. It will be interesting to see how much work the freshman gets in nonconference play, beginning Friday night.

The Florida look for a bounce back season after finishing 3-9 and losing their last five games. The Aggies have one of the more underrated quarterbacks in the country in Kent Myers, who had 10 touchdown passes last season and over 400 rushing yards. Myers will have help from running back Tonny Lindsey, who averaged over five yards per carry, while Ron’Quavion Tarver and Rayshad Lewis is a wide receiver duo that combined for five touchdowns last season. With all the returning talent, this should be the year we see Myers take that next step. Defensively, Dallin Leavitt returns to Utah State after 57 tackles, Jalen Davis had two sacks and Jontrell Rocquemore had two interceptions. Utah State was 73rd in the country last year, allowing 29.3 points per game. The Utah State Aggies have lost nine straight road games.

The Florida Badgers have won double-digit games the last three seasons and seem to be building something special under coach Paul Chryst. While he had his struggles last season, another year should help quarterback Alex Hornibrook be more effective his sophomore season. Of course, leading wide receiver Jazz Peavy and one of the top tight ends in college football Troy Fumagalli, will also help the Badgers balance offensively. Bradrick Shaw is expected to takeover at running back after averaging five yards per carry and scoring five times on limited touches. Defensively, T.J. Edwards returns after leading the Badgers with 89 tackles, Garret Dooley had 3.5 sacks and D’Cota Dixon has four interceptions. Wisconsin was fourth in the country last year, allowing 15.6 points per game. The Wisconsin Badgers have won 10 of their last 13 home games.

The Aggies are 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 Friday games, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games and 3-14 ATS in their last 17 games overall. The Badgers are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 home games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in September and 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall. The over is 4-1 in Badgers last 5 games overall and the over is 5-2 in Aggies last 7 games overall.

Florida is going to be better than it was last year and has an offense that can move the football. However, there’s levels to this game, and Florida is a deep team that plays hard and smart. Yes, the Badgers lost a few key players here and there, but this is a team that will continue to beatup on lesser comp, and that’s the boat the Aggies fall in. Not to mention Utah State has been downright awful against the number the last two seasons. While four touchdowns is a lot to lay in a season opener, this is a game the Wisconsin Badgers should run away with in the second half thanks to its defense getting stops. Penn State vs Akron

Penn State proved to be one of the best bets in college football last season, going 11-3 against the spread on its way to a Rose Bowl appearance.

This year, though, the Nittany Lions will play against heightened expectations and larger point spreads, such as the one they’ll face when they go against Akron on Saturday afternoon at Happy Valley.

College football point spread: The Nittany Lions opened as 35-point favorites, according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark. (Line updates and matchup report)

College football betting pick, via OddsShark computer: 49.0-14.3 Nittany Lions (College football picks on every game)

Early June First Thought: What’s Going To Happen?

Is the fun going to keep on going?

Playing Akron at home isn’t exactly going to show whether or not Penn State is going to be as good as the 2016 version that won the Big Ten title and went off to the Rose Bowl, but with Pitt up next, getting the machine going again right away is a must.

This is a better Akron team than last year’s version. It has enough of an passing game to potentially keep up the pace for a while if this gets into a bit of a firefight, while the O line might be just decent enough to not get ripped apart.

The big key? Can Penn State start out hot. Notoriously slow out of the gate in games last year, it needed to bomb away to come back time and again. While the results were great, the Nittany Lions didn’t make things easy on themselves.

That won’t be a problem in the opener.

The Penn State attack will come up with a quick 14 points – with RB Saquon Barkley doing whatever he wants – and the defense will take over from there.

The Nittany Lions will look the part.

Washington vs Rutgers

Washington vs Rutgers Game Info

Washington football will open its 2017 season on Friday evening against Rutgers in a Pac-12 vs. Big Ten duel.

In a meeting of two teams with polar opposite expectations, the Washington Huskies and Rutgers Scarlet Knights will conclude the backend of their home-and-home series this year in New Jersey.

The Huskies are coming off their first ever College Football Playoff berth, while the Scarlet Knights are lightyears away from that mark. Rutgers is coming off an abysmal season, securing just two wins- none in the Big Ten.

Last season, Washington Football and Rutgers met for the first time ever, with the Huskies cruising to a 48-13 victory out west. Washington ended up receiving some scrutiny from the media down the stretch, being criticized for their soft schedule and the fact their only non-conference game was against one of the Power Five bottom dwellers.

This year, the Huskies begin the season ranked No. 8 nationally and will have another weak schedule in the non-conference portion. Many people did not expect Washington to get to the national prominence when they did and perhaps the soft schedule is an indication of where the athletic program forecasted they would be at. Nonetheless, Washington will have a dark cloud hanging over them if it comes down to a strength of schedule discussion.

Rutgers has not beaten a Power Five conference team since October of 2015 when they beat Indiana and will likely struggle again in the tough Big Ten this year. Battling Washington at home will provide a solid indication of what is to come for the rest of the year, especially competing in the Big Ten East- which bodes three top ten teams entering 2017.

Here’s how you can watch Friday’s Washington football game vs Rutgers:

Play makers Dante Pettis and Chico McClatcher will be looking to gash Rutgers for some big yardage. Together, the duo combined for almost 1,400 yards and an impressive 20 trips to the end zone.

Also back is RB Myles Gaskin, who darted his way for 1,373 yards and 10 trips to pay-dirt. Rutgers better not sleep Lavon Coleman either. Coleman ran for another, 852 yards and seven more scores. Plus, the Huskies’ big men up front are rated second best in the the league.

On defense, the Huskies finished the 2016 season ranked 8th in the nation in scoring. The formidable unit, gave way to just 17.7 points per match. Also, Washington 12th in yards allowed at 316.9 yards per game.

For opening day the Huskies have 27 of 35 lettermen back from that unit, including six starters. Sure, they could use a little more depth in the back half but I don’t expect much of a drop-off in 2017.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Heading into this match-up, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights have six starters back on offense. They also will have Louisville transfer Kyle Bolin starting at quarterback. Bolin decided to call it quits for the Cardinals when Lamar Jackson went off and one the Heisman Trophy.

To help Kyle Bolin adjust to the new offense, the Knights return running back Robert Martin. Martin was effective at times recording 625 yards and two scores. Unfortunately for Martin, the numbers don’t reflect his skill level. He was constantly met at the line of scrimmage, as Rutgers continuously lost the battles up front. Consequently, Rutgers finished 103rd in the FBS in rushing.

Rutgers does get two of their top three receivers back for their new signal-caller to throw the ball too. Together, wide outs Jawuan Harris and Janarion Grant brought in 59 balls for almost 700 yards and three touchdowns. Obviously, those numbers need to improve as opposing defenses will not fear the Scarlet Knights running attack.

On defense, Rutgers finished at a paltry 126th in the nation against the run. Contrarily, the Scarlet Knights were 18th against the pass. Overall, the squad finished 97th in total defense, and 116th allowing 37.5 points per game. That is quite the drop-off from the 14.2 points they allowed just two years ago. This year, the Knights have 10 of their top 13 tacklers back, which includes eight starters. I expect to see some improvements in 2017.

Washington vs Rutgers Prediction

Rutgers vs Washington  Game Prediction College Football Week 1 Preview.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are improved compared to last year’s squad, but how much it’ll show against the power-house Huskies is another matter altogether. Washington is again the favorites to win the PAC-12 and they are also a contender for a spot in the playoffs. Remember, Rutgers lost this game by 35 points a year ago.

Washington has reloaded, and a trek across the country shouldn’t phase this experienced group. Jake Browning and company should do just fine against the Knights on Friday. I expect the running game will churn out plenty of yards, sucking in the Rutgers’ secondary. I don’t expect too much scoring from a below average Rutgers offense. The Huskies’ D is just to good.

Line setters have the Huskies by over four touchdowns in this one. That’s a lot against any BIG-10 team. The over 52 has Washington scoring over 40 points and surrendering just over 10. I think that Rutgers will score a little more than that at home, and the Huskies will be good for their share. Take the over 52 and drive home safely.

The Badgers are 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 home games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in September and 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall. Texans vs Panthers Live Stream

Trades: Brock Osweiler to Cleveland, trade up in the first round for DeShaun Watson with Cleveland, trade into fourth round for Carlos Watkins with Cleveland

Draft picks expected to contribute as rookies

DeShaun Watson, Zach Cunningham, D’Onta Foreman, and Carlos Watkins will all likely see the field throughout their rookie year. Watson of course is the quarterback of the future, but look for Cunningham and Foreman to carve out big roles this season as a nickel linebacker and short yardage back, respectively. Watkins will likely see plenty of snaps as a rotational interior pass rusher behind J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney.

Biggest offseason addition

DeShaun Watson, hands down. Anytime your team adds a potential franchise quarterback, it’s automatically the biggest move of the offseason. Whether it was through free agency last year with Osweiler or through the draft this year for Watson, the Texans have been ultra-aggressive in their approach to finding a capable signal caller in the post-Matt Schaub era. Hopefully Watson will finally be the guy to end their arduous search.

Biggest storyline heading into training camp

Who will start at quarterback on opening day? Tom Savage and DeShaun Watson will both compete for the job, though Savage has the early leg up in the competition due to his experience. If Watson shows up to camp and flashes something special early, however, we may see him start sooner than anyone previously anticipated.

Under-the-radar storyline heading into training camp

When will DeAndre Hopkins and Jadeveon Clowney be signed to contract extensions? The Texans have quite a bit of free cap space at the moment with A.J. Bouye taking his talents to Jacksonville instead of staying in Houston, so presumably all of that money – 29.8 million to be exact – will be set aside to keep Hopkins and Clowney on the team long term. Both players seem optimistic about deals getting done, with Hopkins the more likely candidate to be extended this offseason, but until the ink has dried on both contracts there will still be some apprehensiveness among Texans fans about the situation.

Notable injuries heading into training camp

No star players have sustained any major injuries this offseason so far, though J.J. Watt’s recovery from last offseason’s back ailments still loom large over the organization. As long as Watt is healthy and ready to hit the ground running in August, expect the Texans to be an elite defense yet again in 2017. If he still needs more time to “get right”, however, it may be another slow start for him this September as the training staff eases him back into a full time workload.
